October to February
This is the best time to ride motorcycles in Northern Thailand with cool temperatures and hardly any rain. The lakes and rivers will be full, following the monsoon season. From December to February, the nights can be cool enough to require a jacket in the North.

March to June
March and April are the hottest months of the year. Temperatures can be up to 40 degrees at this time. Some parts of the North are prone to pollution caused by crop burning at this time.

July to October
This is rainy season lasting approximately 4 months. It doesn’t typically rain all day but downpours can be heavy. The rainy season, which coincides with the European and North American summers, is typically the most beautiful time of year as the rains clean the air and bring a lush green across the entire landscape. To take advantage of this, we provide rain gear and either stop for the short downpours or guide riders safely through wet riding conditions.

It’s very common to pack far too much kit because we want to cover every eventuality. So we are here to help you decide what you should leave in and what you should take out. Aim to pack light and fold your clothes correctly as this can save a lot of space.

Nothing can beat the gear you own, as it was chosen for your size and fit. However, we do understand riding gear takes up a lot of space, and we have some gear for customer use should you need a few items to complete your outfit. Please contact us before arrival if you plan to use some of the gear available at Ace Tours Thailand.

You will generally carry very little on the bike itself, as we have a support vehicle that can carry the main luggage. But please don't come with 3 suitcases!

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is one of two international airports serving Bangkok. The other one is Don Mueang International Airport. BKK has a complex of three terminals: International Terminals 1 and 2 and a Domestic Terminal. You can fly in direct from dozens of countries, and fly with a layover from almost any airport in the world.

Chiang Mai also boasts its own international airport. Chiang Mai International Airport, located about three kilometres southwest of the Old City, is the main air hub linking Northern Thailand with China, Hong Kong, Laos, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia. Travelers also have access to a multitude of domestic routes to Pattaya, Bangkok, Samui, Udon Thani and Phuket.

For the last year, Qatar Airlines have operated flights into Chiang Mai from Doha, Qatar (which has excellent connections to Europe).

It is advisable to allow some time after arriving in Thailand before you start the tour. Resetting your body clock and acclimatizing and you may also want to spend a little time working with us on bike setup. Chiang Mai is an incredible city, and you will never be bored.

Here are some links to help you find your flight to Thailand:-

  • Google flights (look at the flight options in grid view to see some bargains).
  • Skyscanner (excellent for looking at specific dates).

To drive a motorcycle legally in Thailand you with either need a valid  international driving permit or a Thai motorcycle license. A valid foreign license is not accepted in Thailand.

An international driving license is easily obtained in your own country. They are usually valid for one year and it's best to not leave it until the last moment.

  • In the United States, International Driver Permits (IDPs) are only issued by the American Automobile Association and the American Automobile Touring Alliance. Processing generally takes 10 to 15 business days, though expedited services may be available to get your license within one or two business days for an additional fee.
  • In the UK, you can get IDPs over the counter at the Post Office.
  • In Australia you can go here to apply for an IDP online.
  • Most other countries have relatively simple procedures to obtain an IDP.

Depending on the length of your stay in Thailand, it may be possible to obtain a Thai driving license with proof of residency, a health certificate, an arrival card and a letter from immigration. This can be done through one of the many "license agents" that help you through the bureaucratic process.

If you have an accident in Thailand and don't have a valid IDP or Thai license, you will not be insured. So if you plan to tour with us, please ensure that you have a legal license. You must carry the license with you at all times.

We will cover 150-250 kilometres of road riding each day. But there will be lots of opportunities for photographs, local street food and sightseeing.

It's your tour and your holiday. Every day we travel to a new part of Thailand, how we get there is open to your imagination. On the open roads of the north, we could travel for miles without seeing other vehicles.

Our top priority is safety, so if road conditions dictate slower speeds, then we will always slow down.

All tours start with a thorough explanation of the days ahead. We all sit down over a coffee at our base in Chiang Mai and run through every scenario. If you have any questions about your trip, be sure to ask here.

As long as you are a confident rider you will be fine. The roads allow you to pick up the pace due to the very nature of their bends and curves. There are sections with tight bends, steep inclines and declines. We have tours to suit all styles of riding and all levels of ability, from beginner to advanced. Catering for the newest riders to the more seasoned and experienced motorcycle riders, our professional tour guides and approach will ensure you are supported 100%.

Safety is the #1 priority. Every tour comes with a lead driver and a rear support vehicle at minimum. Every bike is GPS tracked and everyone is in radio contact with the tour leader.

One thing we can include in each tour is a practice session for riders who don't have much experience or haven't ridden for a while. Training will provide techniques about handling at low speed turning, braking and cornering position. It's essential to get the basics right before we let you loose on a big big! The Thai roads are incredible, but you must demonstrate proper technique.

Collection and return to the airport, all accommodation, breakfast, lunch, dinner, daytime refreshments and fuel costs are included. All you pay for is your flight, drinks and any evening entertainment you might consider.

The whole tour itinerary is flexible before we set off. But each nights accommodation and meals are booked.

We are able to shorten or lengthen the road miles for each leg, and to take alternative routes. As long as we make the evening destination, we are open to suggestions.

Tours can be booked with a 20% deposit. The final balance is due 14 days before the tour start date.

Payments can be made by:

  • Bank transfer into our Thai bank account.
  • Transferwise payment into our Thai bank account.
  • Paypal payment.

A Thai SIM card is very cheap and operators allow you to call home by using a prefix before the country code. AIS allow you to call Europe with a 00500 prefix from 5 baht/minute. USA cost 2.5 baht/minute.

You can also make voice/video calls with Skype, Whatsapp, Line, Facebook Messenger and more; you just need an internet connection. Thailand is blessed with excellent wifi coverage, and it's available at virtually all hotels, cafes and restaurants.

Throughout the tour, our support vehicle operates a wifi hot spot.

You can get a Thai SIM card at the airport, or at any convenience store. A SIM typically costs 100 baht and top ups are just a few hundred baht.

All our bikes are 2019/2020 models and are well maintained in our own workshop. Our support vehicle carries essential spares, so if we do hit an issue with a bike, it can generally be fixed at the roadside.

Most tours start from our base in Chiang Mai, but it is possible to transport the bikes to another start point (with an additional charge). Please contact us and let us know your preferences.

The nightlife in Thailand is legendary. Especially in Bankgkok, the tourist islands and the party city of Pattaya.

Chiang Mai is a huge city and it has many bars, nightclubs, gogo bars, rooftop bars, cocktail lounges and hostess bars.

Riverside drinking is a popular pastime, with residents and visitors settling down by the Ping River with a chilled drink and some good company, while the live band entertain with classic blues, jazz and rock , a hallmark of any Chiang Mai visit.
