Chiang Mai Motorcycle Tours, Thailand

Temples, temples and more temples!

Tourism to the north of Thailand is largely driven by the two large provinces of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. The northern provinces are home to many forests, ethnic hill tribes, elephants, and is a different side to Thailand than is advertised in brochures. Chiang Mai, the Kingdom’s second largest city, is one of the few places in Thailand where it is possible to experience both historical and modern Thai culture coexisting side by side.

The former seat of the Lanna kingdom is far more laid-back than the hustle of Bangkok, or the party town of Pattaya. It's long been a place to relax and experience mountains and nature. Plus the best thing is that Chiang Mai is so easy to get to.

The centre of Chiang Mai is retained within ancient walls. Chiang Mai today is a city of art and culture and, since the 13th century, it has remained the principal religious centre in northern Thailand and focal point for the construction of temples and monasteries. As a result, there are 36 temples within the ancient city walls, 80 officially registered religious sites in the metropolitan area, and over 1,000 temples scattered throughout northern Thailand. The famous square moat measures 1800m x 2000m and is 18m wide. Walking or riding around the moat, one can discover the city gates and and the inner city walls. Chiang Mai is Thailand’s centre of traditional arts and crafts, a veritable bazaar of silverwork, ceramics, antiques, and hill tribe handicrafts. The city has several areas known for their unique shopping venues. The central city offers the night markets, hill tribe handicraft shops along Tapae Road, large shopping complexes for utilitarian goods and a handful of specialised boutiques.

One beautiful side to Chiang Mai is the River Ping. The Riverside characterises all of the old world charm Chiang Mai is so renowned for. It's riverbanks are full of of affordable eateries and live music venues. You will see locals and tourists dining out together.

Walking along the banks of the Mae Ping on the right-hand side of the river you will encounter locals fishing, street food vendors selling BBQ chicken and the of Warorot day market. Crossing the bridge will take you to the north side of the Ping where galleries, restaurants and boutiques selling crafts and antiques.

The Ping River is one of the two main tributaries of the Chao Phraya River. It originates in the Chiang Dao district. After passing Chiang Mai, it flows through the provinces of Lamphun, Tak, and Kamphaeng Phet. At the confluence with the Nan River at Nakhon Sawan it forms the Chao Phraya River.

Chiang Mai’s Night Market, located on Changklan Road in the heart of the city, is one of the best of any city in Thailand, not only for its shopping but nightlife and food as well. The Night Market is a must for any visit to Chiang Mai. The food market that operates nightly on Ansuran Road is just around the corner from the night bazaar. If you drive in a straight line in any direction, you'll soon find yourself in the lush green countryside and pristine rain forests dotted with churning waterfalls, serene wát, and peaceful country villages – as well as a host of markets and elephant sanctuaries.
