Chiang Rai City is provincial town in the far north of Thailand. It is often compared to its larger sister town Chiang Mai. Nightlife, entertainment and shopping are concentrated in the area around the towns Clock Tower.
The most lively attractions in Chiang Rai are the weekend night walking streets. These large open air markets along the road sells food, clothing, souvenirs and artworks. You will also find live music and bars.
The Chiang Rai Clocktower is a popular landmark in the center of town. This elaborate clock stands out thanks to its golden appearance and unique artistry. There is a light projection show which occurs at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm each evening.
The Chiang Rai metro area has a population of 200,000 and is the main commercial centre serving the Golden Triangle border region, it's an excellent base for exploring the region by motorcycle.
The famous white Temple 13 km from the city, built by artist Chaloemchai Khositphiphat. Travelers come from all over the world to see the “White Temple”, considered by many to be Thailand’s most creative religious structure. Work is expected to finish in 2070!
