The Golden Triangle is in the Chiang Rai Province, in the far north of Thailand. The English name comes from the meeting of Laos, Myanmar and Thailand here, but the locals call it Sop Ruak, after where the Mekong river meets the Ruak River.
Historically the Golden Triangle was an area known for opium production. The 2two rivers form a natural boundary between the three countries, Myanmar (to the north of the Ruak), Laos (to the east of the Mekong) and Thailand (to the west of the Mekong).
The main area we visit is the Thai riverside close to where the rivers meet. In the dry season the Mekong runs very low. In the rainy season the full power of the rivers can be seen. A series of attractions can be found on the riverside, such as a giant golden Buddha on a ship, elephant statues, shrines, souvenir shops and Western-style cafes.
The Hall of Opium is of the best museums in Thailand and exhibits the history of opium around the world and in the triangle itself.
