Mae Hong Son is actually a mountainous province in northern Thailand, bordering Myanmar (Burma). It's sparsely populated and is home to many hill tribes. The capital, also called Mae Hong Son, is a gateway some of the most exhilarating motorcycle routes. The Mae Hong Son Loop is an epic motorbike adventure, we will guide you through through national parks, dense jungles, picturesque farmlands, hill tribe villages, mist-shrouded mountains, lakes, rivers, caves, waterfalls, temples, rice fields and panoramic views that will last in your memories forever.
Starting from Chiang Mai, the Mae Hong Son Loop is a 600km journey that takes you through the Mae Hong Son province. The stretch between Chiang Mai and Pai alone boasting 762 hilly curves.
You will visit the main towns of Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son and Pai, and you can ride the loop in either direction. For those who wish to explore authentic Thai towns and villages, cascading waterfalls, limestone caves and rugged wilderness, this is the adventure for you!
- Day 1: Chiang Mai - Mae Sariang
We first visit Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand and then ride to Mae Sariang. The town of Mae Sariang retains much of the charm, culture and character that is often missing in many tourist areas.
- Day 2: Mae Sariang - Mae Hong Son
The next destination is the capital of this charming province, Mae Hong Son town, which is also the half way point on the loop. The route takes you through Khun Yuam and offers the opportunity to see many famous sights such as caves and hot springs. The town boasts numerous temples, the most famous of them is Wat Doi Kong Mu which sits on a hilltop and offers spectacular aerial views of the town below.
- Day 3: Mae Hong Son - Pai
The final leg of the loop on highway 1095 from Mae Hong Son to Chiang Mai via Pai, is arguably one of the most scenic drives in Northern Thailand. Popular amongst hippies, Thai and visitors alike, Pai is more "new age" than traditional northern Thai. This small town is filled with cafes, western restaurants, bookstores souvenir shops, tattoo parlours and inexpensive guesthouses.
- Day 4 and 5: Pai - Chiang mai
After spending time in Pai and taking some special detours, we set off along highway 1095 through the rugged mountains of Mae Hong Son and back to Chiang Mai. The first part of this road has a lot of curves and it probably the most demanding drive of the loop.
The Famous Mae Hong Son Loop is a world class motorcycle adventure. It's one of the most spectacular road loops in the world. You’ll sail past beautiful rice fields, through ancient forests, over hills and mountains, passing water buffalo and wildlife on the way. We stop and meet local people, who will share their stories as you pass through their villages. The Mae Hong Son loop takes a minimum of four days, but we take you to towns and villages along the route.
